Tom,
Since your lever is moving forward as you drive, you might have a very simple problem- the screw that holds the plastic freewheel actuator may be loose. Open the hood and have a look at that- there's a screw with a spring. Try tightening that down a few turns until you get resistance when you move the lever. See how that works out.
Freewheel mode is fun. I use it in my 96 all the time. As someone else mentioned, it will make you a better driver. Not sure your experience with VSaabs, but the freewheel was designed for the two-stroke cars with much less HP. The V-4 can put quite a strain on them and they tend to be a weak link. So in order to preserve the freewheel, you need to ease on the gas and gently "engage" it with RPM. If you insist on flooring it, the shock loads will break it and csuse further damage in the gearbox. Ask me how I know this! I also have a Sonett with a number of performance mods that I drive pretty hard- that has the freewheel locked out.
BTW, I have an article that came out in the VSCNA magazine a couple of issues ago on my experience diassembling a dozen Saab gearboxes to try to find a good one. Drop me a line directly and I can email it to you if you're interested. Also, I encourage you to become a member. They provide a wealth of info and a contact list of all members.
