I have had several antique cars with gas shocks on them and I really dont like the ride they provide. I believe they make car ride rough. I think they work fine on a heavy car (4000 + ) but on light cars I think the rates are so high they hardly compress. I put a modern shock kit on my Model A after having hydraulics and it was like I had removed the springs altogether or I was riding on solid rubber tires. With the hydraulics I could drive the Model A over just about anything and not get my teeth jolted out of me. I can only imagine how bad it would be on a 96 as light as they are. Also, they are constantly pushing up on the suspension. Just see what happens if you remove the strap before they are installed. Hydraulics dampen the shocks it seems to me....and gas try to resist any movement. My opion, and Im not an engineer.
By the way.. thanks for your reply ! Every time I post a question on this site I either get no reply or only one. Hard to believe with all the people reading the posts that no one ever seems to have an answer for anything. Just like this post. Out of all the early SAABs out there I find it hard to believe no one has replaced their shocks recently or cosidered what type they should use. If I were to post on a Model A site there would be so many replies I could not respond to all of them. Different type of owners I guess.......
