If the oil pump started to die, once it drags enough it forces the drive gear on the crank out of position. This makes the dizzy timing all wrong and it won't run. There are a pair of spring loaded pins in the front of the crank that hold the gear in the correct position. I've had a MC850 with weak springs let the gear slip and all was otherwise OK. If you hold the rotor and turn the crank it will move things back and you'll feel it when the gear aligns with the pins again. I've also had a pump fail and it made the engine rather hard to turn by hand. Pulled the oil pump and the motor turned just fine. If you crank has had a bearing failure, David Baugher does nice crank rebuilds.
Good luck
Ken
