The case of the disappearing brake fluid Posted by SteveR [Email] (#2755) [Profile/Gallery] (more from SteveR) on Fri, 28 Nov 2014 15:09:42 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hi all. Cross posted from the sonett BB.
Two or four years ago, my 73 sonett drove around the block for the first time in 20 years or so. It steered, braked, and accelerated. Had the bench the project because of clutch issues.
Today, the brake fluid reservoir is empty, and the brake pedal goes all the way to the firewall with no resistance from the brake system.
I looked around for leaks in the garage, in the cabin, and around the wheels, but didn't find any. So I refilled the reservoir, and tried bleeding the front corners. No pressure would build up to force out fluid. On the right corner, the fluid barely dripped out (and it was gross!). On the left corner, the fluid bled out real slow.
Is this a master cylinder issue? It seems weird for a seal to go while the car was sleeping in a garage for only a couple years. The brakes were rock hard then!
And in the case that this is a master cylinder issue.... any advice getting it out? It seems like a royal pain.
Happy turkey days!
