It would seem to be the hose. The clutch pedal firmed up but now fluid was coming out of the slave cylinder. Then I noticed fluid seeping through the hose. Having cleaned out the slave cylinder and replaced the rubber bits I don't think it could be part of the problem. I imagine there is blockage in the hose or maybe a kink from when I removed it in addition to many tiny cracks allowing the fluid to seep out.
