Your worries are valid as to the safety of convertibles. All convertibles are basically more unsafe than their sedan equivalents. But you must remember that if the sedan is generally a well designed and safe car, then the convertible will have a good structure to be based on. Most convertibles require a heavily reinforced A pillar and windscreen surround as well a extra body bracing to achieve minimal stiffness levels. This is to reduce body scuttle and shake. Current model convertibles all have better reinforcing plus relatively high waistlines....so there is relatively greater amount of bracing to minimize body flex. And body flex is the enemy of all cars. It eventually leads to more vibration and harshness as well as gradual weakening of weld points.
Some makes also include roll over bars in the event of a rollover. The '93 900 (I presume the old 900) does not have a high waistline, no rollover bars, and is based on a late '70 to early '80 car design. I could be very wrong but I doubt that the convertible of that vintage would be very safe in the event off a rollover. Like anything, if you drive sensibly and carefuuly, then you only have to worry about the other idiots on the road!
