I think that all the brake fittings on the 95/96/97 are all SAE thread (American wrenches fit them), although being of British origin they may be British Standard thread.
For safety reasons, all brake lines *must* have a double flare on them and they must be made out of pipe that is certified for use in brake systems. (Steel used to be required but I think there are now some corrosion resistent alloys that have been approved.) The flares can be done using a flaring kit available from NAPA or any major supplier of mechanics tools. There are instructions in the kit on how to use it. Make sure your kit includes a tubing cutter and don't skimp on the quality of the tool to save a few bucks. Your life depends on the job being done right. Plumbing kits will only do a single flare. Some connections only require the first step of the double flaring process while others require both steps. The second step pushes the outer part of the "bulb" formed in the first step into the inner part to form a double walled "funnel" shape. I think you may be trying to get the "bulb" shaped end. New brake lines at the parts store come with the "funnel" already formed on both ends. If this doesn't make sense, you'll see what I mean when you read the instructions for the kit.
