Oops did it again, sorry about the empty messages. This question of tranny lube has been much discussed over the years. Factory spec is for an 80-weight transmission lubricant. This is almost impossible to obtain. I have never seen a spec for 90-weight in 95-96-97 transmissions, many say it is too heavy and I am inclined to agree. An 80W-90 lubricant
is basically a 90-weight that acts like 80-weight at lower temperatures.
75-weight is readily available and preferable to 90-weight IMHO. I and many others use Redline MTL, easy to obtain at any performance shop. It is a 75W-80W synthetic hypoid gear oil with a GL4 rating. GL4 and GL5 refer to additive levels and a gear oil of any weight (viscosity) can have either rating. GL5 has a higher additive level and is NOT recommended by most manufacturers for transmissions containing brass parts (synchronizers). It is intended primarily for differentials which contain no brass but have gears cut differently than transmission gears that require the higher additive levels. Brass parts are adversely affected by GL5 additives. Use GL4 in all manual transmissions unless the mfr specifically recommends GL5. There have been many reports of seals leaking when switching to synthetic lubricants, I have not encountered this in about 8 years of using Redline but if you have the opportunity it might be clever to change them if you are going to switch. Hope this is more enlightening than confusing, the issue is not straightforward due in part to the pesky reputation of these transmissions, and there are many opinions.
