I've had and still have all the same problems you are going through and as much as I love this car, I am tired of it not running as it should. I have a '76 as well but it was originally a non-turbo. The engine seemed to misfire (though for me the problem was most evident around 1500-2500 RPMs)until I changed the points AGAIN causing her to run smooth for about 500 freeway miles (wherein she averaged 29+ MPG as well). Suddenly, it was back to crap. The points were fine, everything seemed in order. I changed distributors and such, no change. Finally, I changed engines - going to a 1980 turbo version. I've changed everything but the fuel distributor but still the silly thing misfires....
THe smell is almost always the line from the tank to the charcoal cannister, just on the other side of your headliner. It is plastic and after 25 years tends to get cracks in it. Not filling the tank up all the way elliminates the worst of it but some time you'll have to pull the thing out...save yourself some heartache and attatch the new hose to the end of the old one and pull the new through that way.
If you get this one figured out, please let me know.
