SAAB transmissions have always been critcized in the press for notchy shifting. The shifter housing had to be changed, too, when the 5-speed was installed because the 4-speed shifter housing doesn't have the slot in it to slide the lever into fifth gear. It might not have been adjusted quite right when it was changed.
The shifter is adjusted by loosening the three nuts that hold the shift housing to the floor and moving the housing around to find the point that the tranny shifts the best. These nuts are strange three pointed wing-nuts. I use a pair of needlenose pliers to loosen them but the right way to do it is to make a tool out of a socket by filing/cutting appropriate notches in it.
