If you connect the advance to a nipple whose source is below the carb throttle plate, eg the adapter plate below the carb, you have full manifold vacuum to the distributor all the time. This is not the intent of the design. Vacuum advance is always designed to run off ported vacuum
whose source is in the carburetor bore near the throttle plate but above it when the throttle is closed, so no vac advance at idle. As the plate opens the orifice to advance is exposed to vacuum increasing in strength gradually as the plate opens further. If your previous setup with the stock carb was in fact connected to full-time vacuum and not to the nipple on the side of the carb, this was not correct.
