Kansas, Paul, Jack, Chip, et al (thanks for all the great support),
I'll keep this as short as possible. Mine is '67 V4 with the weird overheating problem (and bad brakes.) But read on...
Discovered my repair shop had for some inexplicable reason used the distributor off of my dead 1.5L motor on the 1.7L Sonnet engine I had them install. Goofy, huh? Anyway, I figured I'd put the Pertornix ignition I just got from Chip Lamp on the 1.7L distributor and install it on the 1.7L engine where it belonged.
Then things got interesting.
When I pulled the 1.5L distributor off the 1.7L motor I discovered the vacuum advance didn't work and the centrifugal advance was frozen. (Could this have caused my overheating problem I wondered?) I quickly installed the 1.7L distributor with Pertronix ignition on the 1.7L motor, timed it at cranking and it started right up. Zowie! It was smoother, quieter, hugely more powerful and pulls great up to about 4.5k. True V4 heaven.
Now be aware I still don't have working brakes - I'm waiting on my rebuilt master cylinder from Absolute Saab Parts (thanks Paul Vail) - but the emergency brake works for quick, scary test drives. Man my Saab was running good.
Now for the weird part: the haunted little bastard still overheated on a nice cool (mid 50s) evening. FRICK!
So the saga continues. Going elk hunting tomorrow in Colorado so the Haunted Saab will have to wait until next week. If I don't freeze or get shot I'll update everyone after the next round of repairs.
