Five speeds have the cluster shaft extending into the primary case of which the front cover needs a extra knub to complete the sealing surface. Take your 81 cover and carefully trin the knub off and grind to fit the contour of the corner. Take it to a welder and have him TIG weld the knub to the 4 speed cover.
Also - The lower oiler splash pickup is different. The 4 speed has the lower chain attached by a snap ring and the 5 speed by a big nut. Take a straight edge and place across the surface of the 4 speed and 5 speed and you will know how much to grind back to clear the 5 speed nut. The 5 speed plastic oiler is also longer. Dont forget it as the oiler is verry important.
Note,
1980 was the first year for the 5 speed. If you can find a 1980 99 Only speed cover it has the Knub & oiler already modified and will fit without modification. In europe the model 90 from 1981 on was practically the same except they had the H engine installed. They all came with 5 speeds thus the front cover is modified. If you know any european friends, give them a call and have one shipped to the states. They are a dime a dozen over there.
