I assume that the carb you have is the FoMoCo as it was fitted from 1969-on. There is a two-barrel Weber conversion available that is far superior. Even the earlier Solex is better than the Ford carb.
Before you start changing carbs though, you want to do a thorough analysis of the mechanical condition of the engine and make sure the ignition is functioning properly.
I used the free-wheel all the time on my '67 V-4. The free-wheel is actually the least of the transmission's problems, although later transmissions had a 10-roller freewheel hub that tended to wear out faster than the earlier 6-roller hub. The free-wheel is a holdover from the two-stroke engined cars. A two-stroke lubricated through adding oil to the fuel does not get adequate lubrication to the bearings on trailing throttle, so the free-wheel was designed to allow the engine to return to idle when you lift your foot off the pedal. It could be locked out if you needed engine braking on a hill, but on a long hill you still risked burning engine bearings.
There is no book for the 95/96 that is easy to find. Watch places like e-bay for a factory service manual. You also could check with Chip Lamb (link below) to see what he has as he has authorization from SAAB to duplicate any publication that old. The factory manual is the best source for information. The Haynes books are fairly good, but also hard to find. My opinion of Chilton books is that for any make of car they are marginal at best. There are other books that are even worse than Chilton.
