I just got off the phone with Mr. Kennedy of Kennedy Engineered Products http://www.kennedyeng.com . The company makes adapter kits for wide variety of conversions. I was interested in an adapter plate they made to mate a mazda rotary to a subaru 5 speed transaxle (one of which Justin has and won't let go of). Mr.Kennedy's said the part is no longer in production and he wasn't moved by my pleas to produce a small run. He recommended the transaxle from an air cooled VW and flipping the ring gear for the FWD installation. He thought the VW transaxle was much stonger than the Subaru trans. When I mentioned wanting a 5 speed he scoffed and said "wadda like shifting alot" he also said that with the proper final drive ratio, and the wide torque band of the rotary (3000 - 7000 rpm) that a 4speed should be fine. He knew so much more on the subject than me and the thought of 7000 rpms making me loopy I thanked him and hung up (I've been driving a V4 for so long I've forgotten what revs feel like, Oh I miss my my Honda S800).
The company makes a kit for the rotary to VW conversion, costs around $400. They recommend a rotary that came from a car with an automatic transmission (their kit bolts right to the flywheel) and that the transmission come from any year VW except 68 or 69 (the ring gear wasn't reversible those years)
Thats about all for now, except if anyone wants a 87 Subaru shitbox
