I'm also a v4 guy but have a few things you might try.
If the car ran for 20 seconds then it had spark for 20 seconds. To check the spark at the plugs, pull a plug wire put a bolt into the boot (try not to bend the clip too much) hold it a little way away from ground (engine block away from carb)and look for a spark. if you see a nice blue spark then you are good to go and check the plugs. if all that works and the car still wont run check the timing and see if you are getting fuel (clogged fuel filter, bad gas, varnish in the float bowl, clogged jets, stuck float valve,...)
If you don't have a spark then the problen is up stream of the plugs(wires, cap, rotor, points, condenser, coil, ignition switch). If you have spark at the plug wire ends if then pull the plugs and check if they are fouled (remember which hole they came from it will help with the diaganoses) I they look ok then check the gap and put the plugs back in. if the plugs are fouled (black soot of burnt oil) then replace them with new and try again.
If you don't have spark at the end of the wires start working your way back to the coil. In the dark have a friend turn the motor over and look for stray sparks from the the plug wires and around the distributor cap. if you see any replace the wires or cap. If that didn't help pull off the cap and check for wear on the rotor or corrosion on the contacts,or a cracked cap. Also check that the center carbon is ok If that didn't work check the point for wear and set the point gap and dwell(sorry I don't know the specs)
On the coil check if you are getting current on the low voltage side 12v with the key turned on. if you have power to the coil but no spark than try swaping the coil. if all that checks out than replace the condenser.
I think that covers it. I'm not a technical writer so I might be out of order a bit. If you have never messed with point type ignition you will have a learning curve to master and a few tools to buy (brass feeler gauge) but I got to the point where I could set the points on the side of the road in just a few minutes (then I got smart and put in a electronic ignition).
good luck

ps the generator needs to put out more than 12v i think 14v is about right.
