Here's the deal: What you really *want* to do is swap the whole engine from the '86 into the '84. That is the easiest, cleanest solution. If, however, you can't do that, you may be able to continue as planned. Just be aware that the engine in the 90 is a non-turbo, and should be running 9.25:1 pistons instead of the 8.5:1 pistons that a turbo of the same year would be running. That said, the new 2.0l turbo 16v engines do in fact run 9.25:1 pistons. So the compression ratio *may* not be an issue with proper care and fuel. The thing you need to know is that piston material may be substantially different between the non-turbo and turbo engines, and you may be setting yourself up for some serious problems. I've always wondered about this myself but never gotten any firm answers.

As far as the ancillaries, you will have to "come up with something" for the intercooler. Easiest solution is to get the intake pipe from an early, non-intercooled 8v car (may need to look to the U.S. for a supply) and ditch the intercooler entirely - as you may have noticed there isn't much room up front in a 90! The APC system is some very simple wiring but could prove difficult to do since you mustn't cut the knock sensor wire - it's shielded. Might be easiest to get the wiring from a later 16v car and mount the control unit under the bonnet somewhere - that's what I did when installed APC on my 1980 900T.

What would I do? One of two things:

1. Swap the entire 8vT motor into the 90, lose the intercooler, wire up the APC, and run ~8psi of boost. That's a solid 140hp sans cat, which I'm guessing you don't have.

2. Bolt on all the stuff from the 8vT, but keep the naturally aspirated block. No intercooler, no APC, and run ~4psi. That's probably 120hp or so, but a good 140-150lb ft of torque. It'd be quite peppy, likely. You can figure out how to install the intercooler and APC at a later time - or maybe you'll enjoy the car as is!

Good luck!

-Justin
