Maybe this is obvious, but maybe not. Different sanctioning bodies have different views on what's "classic" -- for example, the new "Vintage" class in (U.S.) Sports Car Club of America ClubRally stipulates 1972 or older, so if you were in the US that would have made your decision right there!
This kind of thing is worth checking because, let's face it, BOTH these cars are going to present problems with getting replacement and performance parts, so there's not much incentive to decide on that basis. But if you just wanted a classic-motorsports car with parts that are easy to get, you'd just run an old Ford, Holden, Toyota, etc., right?
Aside from that, I'm going to go against the grain and recommend (all else being equal) a 96 because I think they're easier to work on: powertrain is small and comes out more easily, suspension and bodywork are simpler, etc.
