The more I think about it the more I believe the owner's manual for my '71 recommended driving in the free-wheeling mode on slick roads for the reasons already stated.
As for the transmission, I put a little over 286,000 miles on my '71 99E, and the only problem I ever had with the transmission was a latch that broke, allowing a gear shaft to work its way through some gears and then one end of the shaft fell down inside the housing. I was left with 1st and 4th gears (maybe reverse), but managed to drive it home. I pulled the engine, seperated the tranny, and carted it across the street to my neighbor who was a Saab mechanic. When he returned it he said he inspected all of the gears and could not detected any wear at all. He told me that he had filled the tranny with 30W motor oil, since that was what all FWD cars were using at the time. No gear wear after about 156,000 miles? Phooey to that, I said, and promptly drained and refilled the tranny with a mixture of about 1 pint of 30W Penzoil with 2-1/2 qts of Penzoil 90W to roughly come up with the 75W that was recommended. The mixture didn't seem to hurt the transmission any since it was trouble free for another 130,000 miles.
The engine and transmission were still running fine when I finally gave it to the kid in 1995 and bought a 900S. Of course he figured out a way to destroy the car after about 3 months.
