When I was married I bought my wife a 1974 99. After the first few years I had to have the radiator rodded out every year. That took care of the over heating problem, but never for very long. Finally the head corroded to the point that water was getting injected into one of the cylinders. It looked like termites had chewed it up. My neighbor at the time was a Saab specialist, and he said it was the 4th '74 engine that he had known to do that. Later the same thing happened to a friend's '94. In all of these cases the head had to be replaced.

The only explanation I ever got was that antifreeze like Prestone and Zerex cause "hot spots" in the head when the engine heats up. The hot spots eventually broke down the alloy of the head, causing flakes of aluminum alloy to plug up the radiator. Evidently the allow used in the '74s was different than the '71s, since I never had that problem with my 71. The solution, I was told, was to us Autobaun brand antifreeze. I've more recently been told that Mercedes Benz is just as good (that is what I use in my 900S now). Finally, I was told to change antifreeze every year in the '74.

I don't know how much of this information is really accurate, but maybe it will help.
