Ever change a water pump on a Saab 96 V4? Do you still have nightmares? Well, I just put a brand new water pump on my '67 V4 and it took less than 10 minutes. (Thanks Chip Lamb for the NEW not rebuilt part and the free "blow-up" hose.)
Everyone who's removed one of these bastards knows the inner two bolts, especially the lower one, can be a royal pain. Chip Lamb suggested long extentions with universal joints, etc., and that's how I removed the old one - but it still sucked mightily and took forever. So before I bolted the new one back on I did some thinking and came up with the following alteration to make installing/removing a snap. (Believe me, it worked - I installed my new water pump in less than 10 minutes.)
How? Simple - I drilled out the threads (it's aluminum so it only took 5 seconds) on the two inner posts on the water pump and ran a bolt through the front to a nut and lock washer on the rear. All I needed was a wrench on the nut in back and I tightened the bolts easily from the front. No more one click per ratchet turn 30 minutes per bolt. The other 3 bolts are easy so I left them stock (threaded from the rear.)
It's so logical and easy why didn't Saab do this to begin with? Maybe they thought the water pump would last forever? Or maybe the guy who designed it never had to install or remove one. If he had, there's no way it would have ended up the way it is stock.
Now if I ever have to replace my water pump again (this is my second by the way) it'll be a quick 20 minute job instead of a 2+ hour cursefest.
Thanks Chip for carrying just what I needed and all the great advice and thanks to all who've helped with my car (Jack Ashcraft, Paul Vail, Bill Yudchitz, Tom Donney, et al.) Now, about that Solex 2bbl carb and manifold...
