It can be pitted and a bit rusty and that makes is harder to get back in after you released the brake pedal. After removal of the brake pads you can get the piston out to check. Just step on the brake pedal and it will come out slowly by each push. The cylinder might be a bit rough on the inside as well, which does not make cylinder movement easier. I had the same problem with one brake. I sanded the uneven surfaces of the cylinder wall (it was not deep and very much on the inside)and put a replacement stainless steal piston in, this of course acompanied by a rebuild kit. When pushing out the old piston it turned out that one of the rubber rings had become a bit sticky and got out of place. The Swedish Saabclub sell stainless steal pistons, probably rebuild kits as well. In order to get the caliper moving better again, take it off its mounting, disassemble and get rid of the rust on the contact surfaces. Every little bit helps. After all this my brake worked fine again.
Good luck,
Alex
