Melanie: The original v-4's had fibre gears running the balance shaft from
the crankshaft gear. They are notorious failures. Jack Ashcroft in Oregon makes metal ones which are far more dependable. The fibre gear often strips
it's teeth and the pieces fall into the pan. These gears can be replaced without pulling the engine. Just take off the front cover and they are accessable. The gear stripped on my 96 and spewed antifreeze all over I-70
highway out here in Ks. I replaced the gear with a used one, but had to pull the engine to clean the debris out of the oil pan. When mine stripped
the engine stopped completely. If your engine runs, I wonder if that is the
problem. Take it an easy step at a time: 1) Pull the plugs and squirt WD 40
oil in the cylinders. 2) put the plugs bak in, lift the hood and start the
engine 3)get out and check to see if the fan and crankshaft are turning.
If they aren't shut the engine off immediately. You probably have a stripped balance shaft gear. If they are turning, dont worry about the smoke, pour a 1/2 cup of diesel fuel in the oil filler, let it run for 2 or
3 minutes, shut it off and drain the oil. Change the oil and start it again. Observe the oil light. Is it on? If not, how does the engine run?
smooth? rough? Let us know! Good Luck!
