Dear Sir,
You can call most junk yards, and they will have the "Hollinder" computer, which has a parts location tracker. If you find the junkyard with the Hollinder, ask them if they have a motor for you, if they don't ask them to locate the nearest one to you. The computer has the listing of all the parts in the junkyards across the country.
You can call our junkyard, where I work, Tyler Auto Parts at (410) 531-5995 and Mr. Ray will check the computer for you, if you cannot find a local junkyard to check. The other way junkyards locate parts are via the squack box hot line. Junkyards hollar on this line to all who are listening to locate the specific parts people need and everyone who has it bids for the honor of shipping the part. Our junkyard has this hotline also.
Be prepared to be specific as to your car, Production date with month and year, (usually found on a tag in the drivers door jamb), make, model, package type, type of transmission and the vehicle identification number.
I will pull a listing for a 74 Saab 99 myself and let you know what I come up with.
If the junkyard is in the area, there is a good chance you can ask them If you can come hear the motor run and exactly how many miles are on the motor.
These answers do not include the inventory of junkyards which do not have the computer or hotline, like the one next door to ours. Ellis Wise Junk yard phone number is (410) 531-5000. You can call and ask them there if they have any thing to help you our. They are a pick and pull, you do all the work, so bring your tools and a little red wagon. Other junkyards in the Maryland area that are not on the system, but have alot of cars are the 2 Crazy Ray's yards, one in Laural and one off of Erdman Ave in Baltimore. They are pick and pulls also.
Seek and ye shall find. Dont listen to the mechanics, they are just parts pullers and swapppers. You will kick yourself in the end, like everyone else does, if you ask them about their old....
