The only unleaded gas back then was Amoco. What the lead did was prevent microwelding of the valve and seat. bits of the metal from the seat would adhere to the valve and vice-versa causing pitting and erosion of the valves and seats.
If you are having the heads done just ask for hardened valve seats.
