I saw that car in the TSN Classifieds and it looked pretty nice. I'd say with the car you have, you shouldn't worry about originality, but rather concentrate on making it a good, solid daily driver for your son. When I purchased my fairly original '76 99 EMS about four years I knew that I was looking for a fun car, yet something that I could drive daily. Therefore, I don't concern myself with making it showroom stock, since I'm not trying to win any concours or other awards for originality. I'd say what you have right now is a pretty cool car as it is. Since it was orignally an automatic it has the power steering which only came on cars so equipped. The rack itself mounts differently to the body as opposed to a manual rack car. Therefore, you'd have to throw a slush box in to make it "original". The fact that it's a not a "special" model (EMS, Turbo, etc.) means that it doesn't have much value as a "collector car", the real value is to the owner who can enjoy and fun with it. What I've done with my EMS is upgrade to certain c900 parts such as front hubs and rotors from an '86 (they bolt right on and make changing rotors much easier as 900 rotors are held on by screws and not pressed on as in 99s)and a 900 radiator (requires some cutting, but makes for better cooling). I am planning on fitting it with a rear axle from my '84 900 parts (again, a fairly bolt-opn procedure from what I have heard), so it will have a slightly wider track and use the newer style 900 rear shocks (Bilsteins! It has the crappy KYB Gas-A-Just ones on the rear now). My father and I are also going to embark on a restoration of my 99 (it's a little rusty) this summer as my college graduation present. I recently acquired a free '76 Wagonback parts car to help.
Your son is lucky to have one cool rustfree 99 as well as an enthusiastic dad to help in its restoration. Best of luck to both of you!
