This is a little hard to diagnose from your description. Does the motor
drag or die before or after you place the car in gear? Does it bog down
if the gear selected is neutral and you press the clutch pedal in? I can
think of a couple of things that could cause this. One could be cured from
the outside, the other requires pulling the engine to perform a relatively
simple task. First from the outside: I have read several posts that say it is really hard to get the air out of the clutch slave cylinder, although I
have never had to do it on mine. Check the postings for "96 clutch". If you
are lucky, you just have air in the slave cylinder that needs bled. In which case the clutch is not releasing completely when you press the pedal.
but does release enough to engage a gear which causes the engine to bog.
I just thought it could also be the adjustment on the clutch pedal. Reading from the manual: "Slacken the locknut on the adjusting screw which is located on the lefthand side of the clutch bell housing and turn the adjusting screw. It is correct when pushing forward on the clutch operating
rod provides free play between the clutch and the pressure plate. The clutch pedal should then have 1 3/8 " free play before the clutch is fully
engaged. I would check this first. The third awful possibility is that yor
clutch disk is worn out. Good luck!
