Coolant leak in '73 96 heater Posted by paul [Email] (#792) [Profile/Gallery] (more from paul) on Wed, 26 Jun 2002 09:11:37 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I finally got my rebuilt V4 back together and in the car. Started right up and runs great, sounds smooth and quiet(relatively) and has good oil pressure (thanks, KsKid and others who encouraged me). New problem: After about 50 miles, it started leaking coolant out of the heater. I can't locate the leak, coolant just comes out from the bottom of the heater unit under the hood. It doesn't seem to do it idling in my driveway, even for a long time, but a short drive will cause a fair amount to leak out. My shop manual doesn't say anything about the heater. My Haynes manual has a brief description showing the heater matrix removal. Any thoughts? I guess I will have to pull the matrix out and leak check it. I wonder if somehow I bumped the coolant connecter enought to cause a crack during the rebuild?
Also, how long should I wait before retorquing the head and manifold bolts mand doing the first oil change? I have seen 1000 miles recommended but that seems like a lot.
