Lorie,
That is awfull. I had a very similar event many years ago and it wasn't pretty. I have a couple of these carbs hanging around and would be more than happy to send you one for the cost of the shipping.
I would hate to see a youngblood's first 96 be a bad experiance. My favorite V4 of all time was a '69 dlx. Man was that a fun car, till the winters of New England finally got the best of her.
Just drop me line off the network and let me know if he still needs one.
As an aside, the problem is usually the brass fitting that connects the feul line to the carb. It loosens up over time in the casting of the carb and can fly out spraying gas everywhere. Consider yourself lucky if only the carb and lines are toast. When this happens it has been known to fry the entire engine compartment and waste the electrics.
Solution: I run zip ties around the worm gear clamp and the intake housing to make sure it never moves again (unless I cut the ties) This may not be the most sanitary solution but it has never failed since I started doing it.
