I don't really know anything about Pertronix, but aren't their ignitions usually designed to replace breaker/points ignitions? The system on a B20 of that era is a breakerless magnetic impulse system, and fairly sophisticated. You could fairly easily move to the later Hall-Effect ignition, or with a little work retrofit the '86-'87 16vNA EZK ignition, or go beyond that. You can simply add a hotter coil (MSD, Bosch "red", etc.) or you can add any of the numerous aftermarket electronic ignitons, such as Jacobs, MSD, Accel, etc. Do a search on the Performance or 900 BBS for posts from Kevin K - he's running an MSD system on his 8v and his writeups might be of use to you.
