Hi,
I am an English expat, been in San Jose for just over a year. I ran two 900T's back in the 80s in England but have not driven anything at all for a long time. Still waiting to get a driver licence here, but in the meantime I've just acquired a black 1991 900S manual 3-door. I gather the only local shop here is SAF, so I've picked up some useful info already. However I don't know the area well, not having been able to drive around it, and am lost for good Net and/or social connections in the USA too. Basically there's not going to be much money to spend for a while, so taking the car to a pro shop may be unlikely :( but it would be really useful if anyone knows this year and model well enough to shed any light on the problems I've got or am likely to get.
The car has done 78000 miles and is generally in good condition. However:
Oddly, you don't need to put it into reverse to lock it and remove the key, which I could have sworn all Saabs ought to do; I haven't tested the cruise control but my gut feeling is that it probably won't work; A/C doesn't work, and coming from chilly England I know nothing at all about A/C, never owned a car which had it!
Missing parts I've noticed are the rear console-mounted ashtray, and the cover for the light behind the drivers mirror - small touches but I'd like to know where I could pick these up (other than waiting for Ebay).
Something weird has gone on with the headliner, which was billowing in the breeze from the sunroof. Seems that there is a factory-mounted cellphone setup, with a controller of some sort under the back seat, with everything but the phone in place. Someone screwed up with installing the antenna and mic under the headliner, and it's been stapled to the roof (!) in places. I have a carphone socket and power lead, but no idea what can be plugged into it or whether it's worth doing so.
I have one non-functioning headlamp wiper - well, kind of functioning but without enthusiasm, and it has a broken blade anyway. Luckily the chancs of rain here before October/November are minimal but it would be nice to fix.
Aside from that, the car seems OK. It would be really helpful for me to know someone locally who knows a bit about Saabs and especially where to nose around for small spare bits and pieces from scrapped cars, if indeed there is anywhere locally to do that. If anyone knows a source of a workshop manual that would also be useful, there seem to be loads on Ebay but either for previous or later models. If the 1991 900S has any specific nasties it would be really good to be forewarned - I am not aware of any, but it's worth asking anyway.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer,
Cheers
Chris
