Hello from East Tennessee!
Just read these postings. Yes, "Tail of the Dragon" is worth the drive. Beautful scenery (and sometimes a pull-off place big enough for two or three cars, so you can stop and admire the views). More twistys than you can shake a stick at. The road's a blast to drive fast, and fun to just putter and admire nature as well.
No problem that I've seen with constabulary: it's a narrow, twisty two-lane road running through the mountains, cut back into low ridges that run along several lakes (part of the Alcoa / TVA system). It just wouldn't be safe to try to pull someone over, and in most places, you'd be going quite a while to reach a place to pull of. Lots of drop-offs down to the lakes; sometimes a guardrail, sometimes not.
To give you an idea, the road is a favorite for motorcyclists throughout the region. Only hazard is that some of the bikers seem to think that as long as their tires are on their side of the road, the location of their bodies (and especially heads) is irrelevant. So if it's a busy weekend, go ahead and go fast, but leave yourself enough margin that you can react and not remove some biker's head.
Highly recommended as a *very* fun run. And I can recommend some other really neat roads a little closer to Knoxville as well - such as TN route 116 from Petros, TN, to the Lake City / Coal Creek area. Just watch out for the occasional washout.
