I found out how to remove the door panel on my 9-4X.
First, remove the 7 mm bolt behind the plastic lid in the door handle. Next, remove the "wood" trim piece in the middle of the door panel. This is done by gently prying it out from the bottom of the trim piece using a small flat head screwdriver. When this is done, there are two 10 mm bolts that need to be removed. After this, use the flat head screwdriver to separate the door panel starting at the lower edge and working around the door.
