alternator removal question

I think I've read most of the relevant posts on this and wish I had done so before trying to remove this thing, but here I am, with the job half done. I've gone after the alternator by taking off the belt tensioner and everything else in the area, gotten out the two mounting bolts, and, not having any luck moving the alternator, removed the 4 or 5 8mm bolts that hold the mounting bracket onto the engine. Now the entire assembly pivots out of the locating pins and could probably be freed up with a little more effort but the size of it all may not make it out of the restricted space. Being a little freaked about this, I slid it back into position, refastened with a couple of the bracket bolts and tried to move the alternator again. Trying to move the alternator with a bar (from side to side in the engine compartment and away from the mounting bolt connection) moves the engine on it's mounts; and trying to move rearward away from the bracket doesn't do a thing. Does this make sense to any of you? I thought I had better ask for help before I get out the 2x4 and sledge hammer because if I don't get this part right, life is going to get really bad. Suggestions please.
