Check Engine Light Woes

I have a 1997 NA 900S and the dreaded Check Engine Light just reared its ugly head a couple of days ago.
I have been reading up on the causes and it appears that the only way to determine which sensor is the culprit entails bringing the car to a SAAB dealer and hook it up to a Tech 2 computer. Now here is Sydney, the local dealer (Alec Mildren SAAB in Artarmon) charges AUD 80.00 for this priviledge.
My Haynes manual tells me that grounding Pin No. 6 on the diagnostic connector located under the dash while the ignition is on will cause the system to show its stored fault codes. Hopefully, this may help in pinpointing the cause of the CEL. Has anyone been sucessful in using this method to trace the fault?
Thanks in advance.
