If you still have the old shifter linkage it sounds like the white plastic bushing have broken.
That bushing is suppose to help with the twisting motion that is needed to get between the gears.
The white bushing is hidden inside a rubber bellow on the shifter linkage so you wont see it by just looking down there.
It is possible to replace just the bushing but a better way is to upgrade the whole shifter linkage to the new style.
Search for shifter linkage and you find lots of information.
