ATF to Flush Engine?

Hello,
I've heard of people (with supposed good results) using a quart of ATF to suppliment the balance of motor oil, prior to changing motor oil, to clean up sludge and other deposits from engines.
I've been using standard oil in my engine (as did the previous owner), and want to start using full synthetic (probably Rotella).
My valve cover's inside is coffee colored but no prevalent sludge deposits. After I've changed my oil in the past, it's doesn't take long for the oil to darken. Cooling system and engine are tight, though I do get lifter noise, especially when cold.
Oil pressure warning light extinguishes soon after startup.
If I use a quart of ATF as a flush, how long should I run the engine with it before flushing, and is it a good idea to begin with?
I've already tried Gunk Motor Flush with minimal results.
Opinions?
Thanks,
George M.
