If the wires are still flexible, wash the cables. Hot water and detergent. Rinse and shake dry. Bake at 200F in an oven for 40 minutes. Cool. Spray with ArmorAll Classic while warm and rub in with hands. Bake for 20 minutes. Cool and wipe off all excess with paper towels. The dry ArmorAll is an excelled dielectric and will seal defects in the cables. Do the distributor cap the same way at the same time, and rotor if it comes off, at the same time. Clean the coil face as well.
You want to wipe off all of the ArmorAll that you can. Any overt 'wetness' will attract and hold dust. The surface dryness and imperfections will be impregnated.
From my experience, distributor caps last forever with this maintenance. Dirt on aging cables becomes a source of voltage leakage. Ditto for the distributor cap, rotor and coil face. Cleaning and treatment of these when they are 'dried out' and aging is a very good renewal process. With shop labor rates you would not pay a tech to do this, but it is a very effective DIY job.
Some silicone grease on the spark plug boots is needed to prevent the boots from binding to the plugs.
A good time to renew the plugs while you are at it.
Note how the cables are routed to the cap!
