First let me start off by saying I know this is a heated debate. I also respect and recognize the “full synthetic is best” that is constantly pounded on this board. I did want to share my observation while I had some time to kill in Wal-Mart the other day while perusing the oil section and reading the labels. I think I may have discovered a “bargain” for those who use dyno oil and don’t want the expense of full synthetic.

While I was looking at the API ratings of Mobil 1, Syntec and Shell Synthetic I noticed that they are rated for the 10-30 “SL CF”. I then started looking at the Syntec and Quaker State Synthetic Blend oils and they are rated “SL”. I then stumbled on the “Bargain” of oils. It was Wal-Mart’s Tech 2000 synthetic blend. Let’s face it synthetic blends never tell you the percentage of dyno vrs synthetic oil and they probably never will. I only have to use reasonable deduction to think the Tech 2000 blend is a higher percentage synthetic than Syntec and QS blends(SL only) are and here is why. Remember that Full Synthetic 10-30’s are “SL CF”. Wal-Mart’s house oil synthetic blend in 10-30 in a red 5 quart container is rated “SL CF” and also qualifies for “GF-3” ratings and it cost $7.83 for 5 quarts or $1.566. Now considering that us dyno users of Castrol GTX are paying $1.92 a quart at Wal-Mart and it is API “SL” only it appears to be a bargain. I also have to ask why is it the only “Blend” with the “CF” designation in the store? Is it more synthetic than others? One can only speculate. In closing, I still realize that full synthetic is best. I also wanted to ask the board who makes this oil. A friend of mine sent an e-mail to QS and they said Wal-Mart owns the tech 2000 name but they package the product with their oil. If this is so why is the QS blend lower rated?
