I upgraded and aligned my linkage. I also rebuilt my transmission, but that's another story (and project).
Paraphrased from my Haynes Manual:
· Locate the alignment hole on top of the transmission near the part number plate and remove the plastic plug (if it’s there)
· Put the transmission in 4th gear and insert a 4mm Allen wrench (or equivalent) into the alignment hole. Ensure that whatever you put in the hole cannot fall into the transmission. This will lock the transmission in 4th.
· Inside the car, remove the gearshift gaiter and mounting frame. Insert a 4mm (or equivalent) Allen wrench in the alignment hole in front of the gearshift lever.
· If the Allen wrench can be inserted without difficulty, the gearshift linkage is correctly aligned.
· If the Allen wrench cannot be inserted, then adjustment is needed.
· In the engine compartment, locate the selector rod where it comes through the firewall.
· Loosen the pinch-bolt adjacent to the rubber coupling, to allow movement between the two halves of the selector rod.
· Inside the car, move the gearshift lever until you can insert the 4mm Allen wrench in the alignment hole in front of the gearshift lever.
· Once the Allen wrench is in position in the alignment hole, return the engine compartment and tighten the pinch-bolt.
· Remove Allen wrenches from the transmission and inside the car. Replace the plastic plug in the transmission, and the gaiter inside the car. You should be good to go.
I hope my instructions are clear. If you need clarification, I’ll be pleased to help.
