I have just gone through this exercise myself. I installed a 2 channel amp to bring up the power to my rear 6x9's. Most car stereo guys say to leave the rears on stock power, but I like the fill I get from them. It sounded great and then one of the door speakers blew out. I purchased MB Quart 6.5" component speakers as it was cheaper than buying a good set of dedicated mid bass woofers. They sounded like crap hooked up to the stock amp and distorted at a very low level. Traded my 2 channel MTX amp for a 4 channel and now I run the doors and rears from the 4 channel. Sounds incredible! I enjoy the fuller range sound from the doors. The MB Quart crossover sends 5000 Hz and below to the woofers, I believe the stock amp sends 200 Hz and below.

If you are just going to replace the door speakers than I would recommend something inexpensive. I was looking at a set of Visonik 6.5" midbass speakers that were listed on ebay for $50. This would be easy to do and should yield good results.

My system sounds great but does lack a little low end punch. My 4 channel amp has rca line out, so I may install a sub at some point.
