Engine noise when cold and sludge.

Got a strange noise coming from the serpentine belt area since january. The noise was there when the engine was cold but as soon it was warmed, the noise was gone. For a few weeks the noise was louder. With the warmer temp there, I decided to look for the cause. Was expecting a worn pulley, bad belt or sludge. Removed the serpentine belt, started the car and the noise was still there. So it was sludge related.
The next day, I bought Penzoil's engine flush. You put it in your engine, let it run for 10 minutes and change your oil. They state not to drive the car. Did all that but when I wanted to drain the oil, the drain head bolt was damaged, couldn't drain the engine flush! Drove the car for 2 minutes to a nearby garage. The mechanic wanted a new bolt. Took a cab to the dealer, came back and two hours later (total time) the oil change was done. All that to say that the noise is gone. I will do the engine flush another time just to remove more sludge if any left.
I've been using molbil 1 one for almost two years with no problem. I change oil and filter two or three times a year (i'm driving about 15 000 kms a year). I don't understand why I have sludge?
