The cheaper fuel additives are mainly kerosene type solvents instead of the more expensive, and more effective, fuel system detergents. These cheaper fuel additives just won't do the whole job. Techron Concentrate, BG-44, Amsoil, and Redline have all been shown to be superior fuel system cleaners.
This Redline "White Paper" covers some very good points, although they are obviously marketing their product.
