Base 9-3 sound improvements (I know this has been discussed)

I know that this subject has been hashed and rehashed and rehashed;
but I am getting conflicting information on what I can do to increase my sound quality and volume at a fairly low cost on my 99 9-3 base.
Several people on this site said that they have simply added front door speakers and that has improved quality and sound. BUT my Saab dealer says that could possibly burn out the head unit, a guy at crutchfields and best buy said the same thing. Are they correct? I don't want to damage anything or replace the head unit with the steering wheel controls. If possible I would like to avoid amplifiers etc. And would the dash speakers continue to be used?
My goal is not to have a concert in my car, but to be able to put my stereo on at a reasonable level avoid hearing the music in the car next to me and to hear it at highway speeds.
Any and all advice both general and specific would be welcomed in terms of specific speakers and possible damage. Thanks in advance.
