as a longtime Volvo owner that just defected to a Viggen, I can give you my 2 cents.
I have serious mistrust in Volvo's first year offerings as they have a record of foibles and subsequent improvements. I loved my 855, still have it with 205,000 miles and it is still in good shape (original clutch, by the way)
I intended to get a new V70 to replace the 855, but stumbled on to the Viggen and was pissed at the lack of manual tranny availability and lack of negotiating room in the Volvos.. I haven't had so much fun in a car since the good ole' days tooling around the snowy winter roads in an old 2002! This car has more power than you could possibly need, the best seats on the planet, 30 mpg fuel economy, great versatility, exclusivity, a super fun weekend at driving school thrown in, all for a bargain basement price (if you can still find a 2000 leftover, they go for about 30k). Yes, it has a peculiar habit of pulling from side to side on strong acceleration from standstill. It is not torque steer but rather the fact that there is so much torque applied to the front wheels that as one wheel slips, the other grabs and the car does a bit of a balancing act side to side. Believe me, you get used to it quickly, and if it still bothers, Abbott's kit supposedly drastically reduces the phenomenon.
I have never been in a better passing car- goes from 50 to 80 in a heartbeat.
I have 20k on mine in about 6 months of driving and have had nothing but positive experiences both with car and dealership.
Good luck deciding. Volvo makes a great car too, but look carefully at the Brickboard site, it is possibly the best car site around for real techies.
good luck deciding
Claude
