What the big whine festival about? Why are we so upset over deflation in the SAAB commodity market? They are cleaning out inventory and it is a great day for buyers of Passats, Camrys, Accords and Maximas who can now afford a great car for a mediocre price!! This is an excellent value. Sure thos eof us who bought computes three years ago paid too much for what we got by today's standards, but since when do we expect a depreciating asset not to depreciate. In 1999 a base 9-3 was 27K and change in 2001, a SE can be had for 27K and change. I do not think price model close out inspired price cuts will have a long term consequence on SAAB resale values as consumer demand is not rational but is instead premised on the need for people to affirm their self worth via conspicous consumption. Come, on is Tag Heuer or Omega watch really worth twenty to ten times more than Seiko? Yes if you are in need of self affirmation from others.
Since when do SAAB owners care for the lemming mentality of the mainstream market. Come on, why even discuss a depreciating asset in terms of resale value? The fact that market behave irrationally towards status symbol brands such as MB, BMW and Lexus simply displays that the mass of Americans are morons who have no idea of what something is intrinsically worth unless someone else wants it merely because everyone wants it.
Hey you want high resale, then you need product placement folks. This means signing deals with paramount to put SAABS in space on Star Trek or signing deals to have James Bond return to his automotive roots in a 9-5 Aero, or having SAABs as the sole transportation on Temptation Island!
Create a brand with the vacuous nouveau rich and watch the sales curve slope upward along with the resale price. Start putting SAABs in MTV videos and start putting celebs in SAABs and you just might make the brand vogue with the morons who think a 3 series BMW is worth upwards of 38K and who buy their underware at Nieman Marcus.
