Lonely message here. Welcome to de Club, Chris.
I think you will enjoy this car. They grow on you. They will go v fast at top end. They will accelerate better than most cars at altitude and in cool, damp air (turobs love that cool, damp air). They are v comfortable and will not wear you out on the long trips. They are OK but not fantastic on gas. Equipped with the right tires, ice and snow is where they become fun (remember the cool air?). They are a hard car to get killed in - perhaps the hardest in the class based on actuarials so don't pay too much attention to the crash test data until you find the actuarial. They are also the hardest car to steal. Also, Saab owners are statistically more likely to own a dog than any other car-owner, or so I read here.
They have an excellent climate control system although they fog up in some circs unless you put on the a/c system too.
I have a 99 9-3 with 44k km on it. The rheostat temp control on the heater has gone/snaps off in your hand. That's about it. Tt's a common fault. One guy here has had 4 of em break on him. Worst part was, the dealership could not get this part in North America and had to back order in winter to Sweden.
I change my own oil and spark plugs. Plugs ( I was told here) are the single cheapest tune-up you can do. Saab is an easy car to work on.
Other than that - nothing. It would be a long post if I went on about the old one (Saab owers are the 5th most loyal of all marques).
I'm not yet into performance parts but the name Abbott comes up with some frequency here.
I like the Focus and find it quite good looking. A real prizewinner. You'll be happier with the Saab. The Saab clearly has more class than a Focus. In fact, the Saab has more class than most other cars out there :-) At least, that's the way I look at it.
Happy motoring! (It's acceptable still to wave at other Saabs.)
