I find your description of the condition perfectly adequate.
I have driven both auto and manual.
Saabs have a reputation for having a "notchy shifter" and 2nd to 3rd is your longest and most angular throw. I always had clunks with my standard, especially into reverse but also into third.
When I bought my '79, it was out of warranty so I lived with the condition, banging the shifter over with a little more muscle and hoping I could knock off the notches. This worked and the shifter returned to normal effort after some banging and clunking.
Later, when I lost a tie rod end and the driver's front wheel ended up splayed out on the street and my tranny on the street, I found I needed a new tranny. I'm not saying you will end up with the same thing happening. Anyone who gets tie rods regularly inspected ought to be able to replace a corroded tie rod end w/o replacing a tranny.
Under my insurance policy, however, my incident was considered a "collision" (with the road) and this financing helped me with the bruise to my wallet. I had to break in this new transmission by banging into 3rd and it became smooth after a bit. Perhaps not as smooth as competitors' trannies but for a Saab, it was smooth. My thesis is, these cars are ruggedly built and each component can take a pounding, including the shifter.
When you take it to the dealer, they may be able to make an adjustment. I just don't know.
