I have lost some sleep over what I could have done differently to avoid this damage, and straightening the wheel out or running over the curb seems like the most logical thing to do.
Probably the worst thing that could have happened was to try to steer away from the curb, which is what happened. Since the wheel was turned left and I hit sliding somewhat sideways, the curb tried to straighten it out. Of course, this meant bending the tie rod.
I do have quite a bit of experience dealing with slides; I'm a skiier and thus do a lot of winter driving in bad conditions. The real problem with this one is that it happened so quickly and in so short a distance. My mind was on avoiding the other car at all costs. Scraped wheels and alignment are easier to repair than bumpers and sheet metal. I do think that if I turned into the curb more, I could have saved myself from the the tie rod damage, but who knows?
Live and learn.
I will check into wheel straightening, but I think it wouldn't even be worth it. Most of those places want $75-$125, so just getting a new one (sans curb rash) at $125 wouldn't be too bad a deal. I will check into it, though.
