I wrote a little to Dean in this post, but my most unusual Saab story of the trip was repairing a 1990 Classic 900 16V that had quit on the way to the ski week holiday, was repaired, and then quit again 1/2 way back to Stockholm.
Believe it or not, this USA "Yankee" had the answer all along.
The first repair on the way to ... was replacing the ECU, which for a time seemed to work. I replaced plugs, cap, and rotor, and as I checked for spark ---saw that there was NO SPARK.
The litte ignition power stage down in the left front fender well near the charcoal canister was the culprit. This part was cheaper from Volvo in Sweden than Saab.(It is a Bosch part). In the USA, I found it to be even less at VW.
That part was always the most overlooked in the "won't start" complaint department. It can work one minute, and quit the next. My sense was the car was over 11 years old. HAD to be it--problem wise.
Installing it with an application of di-electric grease on the back takes 5 minutes, or 20 minutes with freezing fingers and the little screws you need to reinstall to the heat sink.
VROOOOOM !!!!
